BUR (Built Up Roof) Systems:
Maybe one of the most durable roofing systems, BUR roof systems have been around and used in the low slope roofing market for good reason. These systems, although tough on the environment due to the amount of asphalt used and harmful vapors they create when heated, are unsurpassed for their weather tightness and durability ratio. BUR systems are created by installing multiple plies of fiberglass asphalt coated felts adhered via hot mopped asphalt.
Typically the system is topped off with a flood coat of hot asphalt and then ballasted with gravel. BUR systems, however are not without their drawbacks. These systems contribute to the island effect for the building and urban areas and are not very energy efficient. They also come with many harmful environmental and labor safety concerns because of the heating and handling of 400-450 degree asphalt and large amounts of propane gas stored at the property used to heat the asphalt.
